In depth

Northgate Retail: 51% to 93% in one quarter

Northgate run 62 stores with a shared back-of-house waste area in each. Their recycling rate had been stuck in the low fifties for three years despite staff training rounds.

Our composition audit found the problem was not behaviour. The general waste bin was the closest one to the door in 58 of 62 stores, and the card bale cage was outside in the yard. People used the nearest bin, as people do.

We re-laid every back-of-house area, put colour-coded bins at the point of waste, and moved the card baler inside. We changed nothing about the training.
